I saw Land of the Dead tonight.
www.imdb.com/title/tt0418819/
First off, we went to a old shitty theatre where the tickets are super cheap, the seats are smelly and you do not have to show a ticket stub to get into your movie. Apparently it is an old porno theatre. Who knows. But it added to the mood sorta...creepish.
I was sort of iffy about seeing it. I thought it might be just like Dawn of the Dead. Pathetic attempt at the classic zombie story.
Man was I wrong. I loved it. The first thing I noticed was the makeup and costume design on the zombies. The main zombies you saw throughout the film had wonderful makeup. The others were great too, but the main ones were awesome. None of that quick cheap crap the Dawn of the Dead guys did.
Secondly, character development! There was actually some of it! I was impressed. Horror films sometimes skip over the character development which bothers me. I didn't feel for any of the Dawn of the Dead characters, but connected with these ones. Even one of the zombies.
Next, story line. They took a new spin, the zombies had been around for a while and the living people made a safe city and has an army to go out and kill all the zombies and stuff. High tech system. But the lower class citizens have it hard and use the scraps left behind the rich. They are all barbaric and slowly becomming a truely filthy state.
And of course, camera work and lighting and sound effects. Yes it had that weird scream the zombies make. Yet they used it in a new way. It was not over done or anything. Lighting, dark of course. Yet used lights to accient the needed areas of the set well. And while I found the camera work to be nothing special, it was alot better than most horror flicks.
Overall, I give it 2 bitten thumbs off. (2 thumbs up) If you liked the zombie stories and if you like George Romero (the director), I highly suggest this film.
