Alright, let's start this off from the beginning, I'm not a supporter the so called war on terror, I'm merely an objective bystander making comments and until it begins to affect me personally that is how I will remain. On top of all of that I'm a Canadian so this really has no bearing on me, I'm just reporting what I see, so please no mud slinging.
As of late I have been noticing more and more people denouncing the war in Iraq and demanding the Americans be moved out to allow the region to stabilize itself. So of course they're lobbying and petitioning for George W to pull 'em on out.
The fact plain and simple is right now they can't. Now before you start aiming those heaps of flaming garbage at me let's make a quick assessment of the facts to my knowledge.
The war is not a good thing for American PR, the war is killing soldiers and civilians alike and it was controversial in the first place.
This is what most of us know and probably will be all that we probably will know. All this said the American government deemed it necessary to relive Saddam of his throne (both obviously and rather foolishly). Now that it's done they have a completely different problem. Restructuring the whole goddamn area, something they obviously didn't think about previously.
Now, looking at the lack of infrastructure and virtual despotisms which surround the "liberated" (a term I use loosely) Iraq we see George in a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" sort of situation.
Let's say all the people who are lobbying to get the American soldiers out of Iraq get their wish. Good ol' Georgie pulls the army out of there and leaves the country in it's current state. We would leave them with an unstable government, lack of necessities such as water and electricity and surrounded by he aforementioned local despots.
Now, given the chance, such as the armies withdrawing too early, all the warlords and despots would move in and begin warring over the new territory, an issue that the Iraqi government is not currently equipped to handle. Say, even worse, if one of these warlords won the government would collapse and they would be left in more ruins, with more dead to bury and back in the same situation that they were before to boot.
If that happens they'll blame America, it's going to be all their fault and the lobbyists will begin whining on a completely different side, just like they're doing now, so either way, whether the war was right or wrong they're stuck for the duration.
And man, it just makes you wonder if we could have left well enough alone to begin with.
